On joint une lettre en partie dactylographiée et autographe adressée au même : "Dear Mr. Cooper, I hope you will forgive me for suggesting that you should take any worry and trouble on your shoulders with regard to my new book. I thought you had some Club Room or central place where your members went for their flies, and that it would be an easy matter just to leave notice of my new book there. I hope you will do me the honour to accept the copy I am sending, and I am venturing to put my name inside the cover." [suivent quelques mots autographes].
L'exemplaire a ensuite été offert par Mr. Henry Cooper à son ami R. Stimson (Glenmount, Grande Parade, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex) : "to his dear friend R. Stimson Esq. with his gest wished for his success as a fly fisherman (July 4. 1917.)" (cachet de R. Stimson).
Ce monumental ouvrage, véritable encyclopédie de la pêche à la mouche, n'a pas été traduit en français. L'Art de la pêche de la truite et du saumon à la mouche sèche, du même auteur, a été traduit en français en 1913.

Frederick George Shaw a écrit plusieurs ouvrages sur des sujets très divers : "Our future existence, or the death-surviving consciousness of man" (1912) ; Comets and their tails and the Gegenschein light ; Fiscal facts and fictions. Shaw a fondé une école de pêche du saumon et de la truite à la mouche e, n 1906 (5, Marlborough Road, St. John's Wood). On peut lire dans les prospectus reliés en début d'ouvrage que Mr. Shaw a mis au point le lancer pour la pêche à la mouche auprès de plus de 2.000 clients durant les 8 dernières années. Il apparaît que Mr. Shaw fut un éminent guide de pêche avant l'heure. Il a par ailleurs également commercialisé des cannes à mouche pour le saumon selon ses spécifications, cannes qui étaient marquées à son nom (publicité en fin de volume). Il a aussi commercialisé des couteaux "spécial pêche à la mouche" (the Shaw's Fly Fishing knife). Idem pour la boîte de graisse pour graisser les mouches. Sans parler du panier-sacoche de pêche spécialement étudiée.
Cet ouvrage connaîtra une deuxième édition en 1920.
